The PlayStation 3 has sold 56 million units during its lifetime Sony has revealed - almost as many as the Xbox 360.
Despite launching a year later, PS3 sales are now just 1.3 million shy of Xbox 360's 57.3 million total which Microsoft reported last month.
Recent data revealed in a Nintendo financials call showed that PS3 was the best-selling home console in Europe this year - Xbox 360 has led the pack in the US.
Sony said it had made less profit on PS3 in spite of increasing sales because of the console's price-cut. Overall Sony reported a ¥27bn loss for the quarter up to and including the end of September, citing exchange rates and poor performance by its TV division.
